Lauren Posner is a world music singer of Jewish background.
Her music has a spiritual tone that has been developed through a variety of Mediterranean influences. Sung in Hebrew, English, Yiddish and French, this debut album takes us to a unique and entrancing place.
Many of the songs closest to Lauren’s heart come from her Jewish upbringing. Raised primarily in Jewish communities in both Canada and the US, she inherited the rich musical traditions of Eastern Europe (Yiddish) and modern Israel (Hebrew), as they were adapted for North American Jewry. For Lauren, these songs are inextricably linked to the ancient and modern stories of the Jewish people, at times of their suffering; as well as of their hope for world peace. It is from this deep vault of music that she draws a strong spiritual connection.
Although Lauren sang occasionally as a young adult in the cafes and bars of Montreal and in her native Toronto, her performing experiences were limited to an occasional hobby that followed alongside an academic career. After completing a Bachelor of Science degree at McGill University in 1997, she returned to Montreal from Toronto in 2000 to do graduate work in the field of human rights at McGill. There was something special about Montreal that drew her back. Her intent was to pursue her vision of world peace though academic studies -- and yet the city held another fate for her.
While enjoying the multi-ethnic soul of Montreal’s Mile End, Lauren lived a graduate-student life and pursued French-language classes at the Commission Scolaire de Montreal. It was through a French professor there that she was connected to her bassist and partner composer, Igor Bartula, who was already active in the Montreal music scene. Together, they collaborated to write world-beat music in English and French, and to create new arrangements for the Jewish music that impassions her. The current project developed gradually and, with six other Montreal musicians.
